Wuthering Waves Echo Tuning Guide: Substat Grades, Tuner Economy, and When to Stop
Verified against the released game (v3.6). Where sources disagree, we say so.
Tuning is where Wuthering Waves' gear system stops being forgiving. Levels you can always recover, weapons you can swap, and even badly-chosen Sonata sets can be re-farmed — but an Echo pushed to +25 with weak substats is a permanent monument to every Tuner you spent on it. There is no re-roll. There is no reset. The community was still publicly requesting a retune feature as of early 2026, and the answer is still no.
This guide covers the tuning system completely and honestly for version 3.6 (live 2026-08-20 through 2026-09-30): how the five substat reveals work, the three Tuner tiers and where Tuners come from, the community-mathematized grade ranges for every substat, the cumulative EXP cost of each milestone, the disputed per-slot Tuner costs (and why this guide refuses to publish an exact table), and — most importantly — a set of stop rules for deciding, at +10 or +15, whether an Echo deserves the push to +25. What tuning is, mechanically
An Echo's level cap is +25. As it levels, nothing about its substats exists yet — they are hidden until Tuned. Tuning happens at every fifth level: at +5, +10, +15, +20, and +25, you spend Tuners of the tier matching the Echo's rarity plus Shell Credits to reveal one random substat. At the later milestones, the tune does double duty: it reveals the new substat and adds an extra roll to already-revealed substats, which is how an Echo's existing lines grow stronger rather than the piece simply accumulating unrelated stats.
The full sequence for a gold Echo, then, is:
- Acquire a 5★ Echo with the correct main stat and correct Sonata tags (the gating decisions — see the Echo System Guide).
- Feed it Echo EXP to +5, then tune: first substat revealed, at random from the possible pool.
- +10, tune: second substat revealed.
- +15, tune: third revealed.
- +20, tune: fourth revealed.
- +25, tune: the fifth substat — which only exists on 5★ gold Echoes — revealed, with the milestone's extra rolls applied across the revealed lines.
Five substat slots, five tunes, one irreversible commitment ladder. Every step costs Shell Credits on top of the Tuners, and every revealed line is final. That finality is the entire strategic texture of the system: the game is not asking whether you can afford +25 (eventually you can afford anything), it is asking whether this Echo deserves it before you know what its last two rolls are.
The no-retune rule, stated plainly
Because it is the most consequential fact in this guide: revealed substats cannot be changed or re-rolled. Not with another Tuner, not with a late-game item, not with a feature patch. The research record is explicit on this point, including a specific correction that circulates in community discussion: there is no "substat re-tuning" feature that arrived with version 2.0 — 2.0's Echo-side changes were new regions, new Echoes, new Sonata sets, and Data Bank cap changes, not retuning. Community threads requesting the feature were still active in early 2026, which is the strongest available evidence that it does not exist.
What the system does offer instead, so you do not go looking for a reset button that is not there:
- Echo Presets — loadout presets that let you save and swap whole Echo configurations per character. Useful for reusing pieces across builds; irrelevant to fixing bad rolls.
- Tuner Synthesis — available since version 1.1, converts lower-tier Tuners upward into higher tiers. An economy tool for your Tuner drawer, not a correction tool for your Echoes.
- Data Merge — the only true exit from a bad Echo: merge five unwanted Echoes into a fresh roll (mechanics in the Data Bank Guide). Note that upgraded Echoes cannot be merged, which places a hard floor under "just tune it and merge it later" — the EXP and Tuners are stranded the moment you commit.
Internalize the asymmetry: every other investment layer in the game has some recovery path; tuning has none. That is why the rest of this guide is mostly about not tuning.
Tuner tiers and where Tuners come from
Tuners come in three tiers — Medium, Advanced, and Premium — matched to Echo rarity. You cannot tune a gold Echo with starter Tuners; the tier requirement is part of the rarity gate that keeps early accounts from trivially finishing gold pieces. Tuner Synthesis (since 1.1) lets you convert surplus lower tiers upward, which smooths the tier mismatches that accumulate as your farming shifts toward 5★ Echoes.
The documented income picture (community-sourced figures, useful for budgeting):

Read those two numbers together and the shape of Tuner economics appears: dailies provide a broad baseline across tiers, while Tacet Fields — the Waveplate-priced (60 per claim) Echo-set encounters — are the targeted Premium-tier faucet. Since only Premium Tuners touch 5★ Echoes and only 5★ Echoes are worth tuning, the practical consequence is that your serious tuning budget is paid for in Tacet Field claims, and the daily ~30 is mostly lower-tier income that Synthesis slowly converts upward. The cost table this guide will not publish
Community sources actively disagree about the exact Tuner cost per tuning milestone. One widely-read guide claims roughly ten Tuners fully tune an Echo; independent community math puts the total closer to fifty. Those figures are irreconcilable without in-game verification, and the research base flags the entire per-slot cost table as unverified — so this guide states the disagreement instead of resolving it by fiat.
What you can rely on regardless of which figure is right:
- Each milestone costs Tuners plus Shell Credits, and the costs escalate. The structure is documented even where the exact numbers are not.
- Five tunes happen per Echo (one per milestone, +5 through +25), so total cost scales with how far you push — a +10 stop spends two tunes, not five.
- The disagreement itself is decision-relevant. If the true cost is near the low estimate, over-tuning is cheap and aggressive pushes are low-risk; if it is near the high one, every stopped Echo saves weeks of income. Planning around the pessimistic figure costs you little if it is wrong; planning around the optimistic one costs you a Tuner deficit if it is not. Budget conservatively, verify the milestone cost in-game the first time you tune a gold Echo, and let your own claim screen settle the dispute for your account.
The same conservative posture applies to the Shell Credit side: Ascensions, Forte, weapons, and Echo EXP already compete for Shells (a full Resonator build path alone runs into the 600,000-plus range — see the Resonator Leveling Guide), so treat tuning's Shell appetite as real money, not rounding error.
The EXP milestones: what each +5 costs you
Echo EXP is a separate currency from Tuners, and its cumulative cost curve is steeply back-loaded. Community math (via GameFAQs-derived figures) gives the cumulative totals:

The intervals tell the real story:
- +5 costs 4,400.
- +5 to +10 adds 12,100.
- +10 to +15 adds 23,100.
- +15 to +20 adds 39,500.
- +20 to +25 adds 63,500.
Each successive milestone roughly doubles the EXP of the one before it. The final fifth of the ladder costs more than the first four-fifths combined. That curve is the quantitative backbone of every stop rule in this guide: the information you gain from the first two revealed substats (bought for 16,500 cumulative EXP and two tunes) is disproportionately cheap relative to the blind commitment of the last milestone (63,500 EXP, a fifth tune, on rolls you have only partially seen).
Echo EXP arrives from overworld Echoes fed into upgrades, boss rewards (weekly Calamity clears drop Echo EXP alongside their other materials — see the Weekly Boss Guide), events, and duplicate Echoes converted to EXP. Because duplicate absorptions grant no Data Bank progress (only first absorptions do), feeding duplicates into the EXP grinder is their natural destination.
The grade system: what a substat roll can be
When a substat is revealed, its value is rolled from a grade ladder — community math (wuwa.uk's uniform-grade model) maps the ranges as follows. Percentage stats have eight grades; flat stats use discrete step values:

Under the uniform-grade assumption, each grade is equally likely, which puts the odds of a maximum roll at 1 in 8 — 12.5% — for the eight-grade percentage stats. Those odds deserve two opposite readings, and mature tuners hold both:
- Max rolls are common enough to expect. Across the dozens of substats a full roster reveals, one in eight lines landing on the ceiling is a steady supply of satisfying moments — and a steady temptation.
- Max rolls are rare enough to never wait for. A "perfect" Echo (correct main stat plus five on-role substats at high grades) compounds odds that make it a lottery outcome, not a plan. An Echo whose five lines are all on-role at middling grades outperforms an Echo with two perfect lines and three dead ones, every time.
The grade table also defines what "dead line" means per character: flat HP on a damage dealer, DEF% on nearly everyone's carry, Energy Regen on a character whose kit never waits for energy. The roll is random from the pool; whether it has value is determined by the seat the Echo occupies — which is why main stat and Sonata verification (again: Echo System Guide, Sonata Effects Guide) come before any Tuner is touched.
Reading an Echo before you invest
The evaluation sequence, run every time before a tune:
- Is it 5★ gold? No: do not tune; it lacks the fifth slot. Merge fodder or EXP fodder.
- Is the main stat correct for the character? No: stop. Main stats are as permanent as substats and far more visible — a wrong main line invalidates everything downstream.
- Are the Sonata tags right for the target build? A 5-piece conditional bonus outweighs substat luck; off-set pieces tune last, if ever.
- Tune to +5 and +10, then read the two revealed lines. Both on-role at usable grades? Continue to +15. One on-role? Consider the character's hunger for this piece before continuing — the remaining three reveals must outperform. Both dead? Stop at +10 and repurpose the piece; you have spent two tunes and 16,500 EXP to learn exactly what needed learning.
- Only push +20 to +25 on Echoes with three-plus on-role lines revealed. The last milestone is the most expensive single purchase in the system (63,500 EXP, the fifth tune, the extra rolls) — spend it on confirmed quality, not on hope.
Stop rules by milestone
Compressed into the decision table the rest of this guide argues for:

Two calibration notes on the table. First, "on-role" is defined by the seat: the same Energy Regen line that is dead on your carry is premium on an ER-stacking support; the same DEF% that ruins a DPS piece might belong on a tanky swap piece. Grade tables are universal; role-fit is not. Second, the table is deliberately stricter on cheap pieces — a Cost-1 Echo's main-stat pool is only ATK%/HP%/DEF% and its replacement is trivially farmed, so spending the +25 premium there is the classic misallocation. Concentrate final milestones on the Cost-4 main piece and the two Cost-3s of your carry; those five loadout slots are where tuning budget converts most directly into account power.
Tuner budgeting across a roster
Tuning income is finite and daily-capped in practice (~30/day baseline plus Tacet Field Premiums at 60 Waveplate each), while tuning demand scales with your roster — nine-plus raised characters, each wanting a tuned 12-Cost loadout, each loadout wanting five pieces, each piece wanting five tunes. The arithmetic never closes; it only prioritizes. The allocation order that respects it:
- Current carry's full loadout first — five pieces to +25 through the stop rules.
- The carry's replacement candidates — Echoes that fail a stop rule become hand-me-downs for the second team's matching seats rather than merge fodder (if still unleveled, they can also merge; upgraded pieces cannot).
- Permanent supports' core pieces — correct sets and main stats, tuned to +15 as the standard rather than +25.
- Tower reserves — main stats only, no tuning past the first milestone, because Vigor's 10-use accounting makes these characters consumables (see Tower of Adversity).
And one synthesis habit worth its own line: run Tuner Synthesis whenever your lower tiers cap out. The daily ~30 arrives mostly in tiers your gold Echoes cannot use; converting the surplus upward monthly keeps the Premium drawer from being the sole gate on your serious tuning.
A worked example: one Cost-4 Echo from drop to decision
To make the stop rules concrete, walk a realistic case. Your Glacio carry needs a Cost-4 main piece. You claim its Overlord boss with an Enhanced Drop Rate charge, and a 5★ gold drops with a Crit Rate first line and the correct set tags — the acquisition lottery went your way. Now the discipline starts:
- The checks before spending. Gold: yes. Main stat Crit Rate, correct for this carry: yes. Sonata tags matching the 5-piece target: yes. All three gates pass, so this piece is tuner-eligible — most farmed golds fail here and never get this far, which is itself the system working as intended.
- +5 (4,400 cumulative EXP, first tune). The revealed substat is DEF%. Dead line for a carry — but one dead line out of five unknowns is not a verdict, it is one data point. The stop table says continue: a single dead reveal at +5 is inside normal variance.
- +10 (16,500 cumulative, second tune). Crit DMG revealed. Score: one dead, one premium. The evaluation is now genuinely close — the stop rule's borderline case. You continue, because the piece is the carry's core slot and one premium line already justifies the cheap milestones.
- +15 (39,600 cumulative, third tune). Flat ATK — a modest line, useful if unexciting. Two usable lines, one dead, two unknown. The table's +15 gate ("fewer than two on-role lines: stop") passes on quality if not on quantity.
- The +20 decision. Here the framework demands honesty: 79,100 cumulative EXP sits on the piece, the +20 milestone adds 39,500 more plus a fourth tune, and the final push to +25 would add 63,500 beyond that. Two confirmed good lines on a core slot justify the +20; whether +25 is justified depends entirely on what the fourth reveal shows — that is the last information purchase before the most expensive blind commitment in the system.
Notice what the example actually demonstrates: of the five decision points in a tune, four are cheap and informative, one is expensive and blind, and the entire discipline is arranging your spending so the blind one is only ever reached on evidence. A different player, hitting DEF% at +5 and flat HP at +10, stops at 16,500 EXP and two Tuners — and by the fourth such stop has banked enough for another candidate's full run. Over a roster, that difference compounds into weeks of Tuner income.
Tuning questions players actually ask
How many Tuners does one gold Echo actually need? Community sources disagree — estimates for a full five-milestone tune range from roughly ten to around fifty, and the research base flags the per-slot cost table as unverified. Check the milestone cost the first time you tune a gold piece and plan from your own claim screen; budget toward the pessimistic figure in the meantime.
Does a lower-grade roll ever improve? Yes — the later milestones add extra rolls to already-revealed substats, which is how lines strengthen beyond their initial reveal grade. That mechanic is why "all five on-role at middling grades" is a stronger finish than it looks, and why stopping early on two revealed lines underestimates a piece's eventual shape.
Should I tune the 4-Cost before the rest of the loadout exists? Tune the main piece first only when you are certain of the set and the main stat — the Cost-4 is the hardest piece to replace and the one whose Echo Skill anchors the rotation. But if the Sonata plan is still undecided, tune nothing: an off-set tuned Cost-4 is the most expensive mistake in the system.
What do I do with a stopped Echo? If it is still unlevelled enough to merge, it can enter Data Merge as one of the five; if it has been upgraded, it becomes a hand-me-down for a bench seat or EXP food. This is why the stop rules are set where they are — stopping early keeps options open that stopping late destroys.
Are Tuners ever the bottleneck versus Echo EXP? Usually yes, past the early game: Echo EXP arrives continuously from farming while Premium Tuners arrive at a bounded rate (roughly 30 total per day of daily income, plus 1–2 Premium per Tacet Field run). Tuning pace is set by the Tuner drawer, which is why conservative stop rules convert directly into more completed Echoes per month.
Mistakes that strand Tuners permanently
- Tuning non-gold Echoes. No fifth slot exists below 5★; every Tuner is stranded, and upgraded pieces cannot even merge afterward.
- Pushing to +25 before +10's information. The two-cheap-rolls-then-decide pattern exists because the first milestones are informative and the last one is expensive; inverting it buys blindness at full price.
- Waiting for max rolls. At 12.5% per line, five-on-role at strong grades is a lottery ticket — evaluate against middling-grade expectations, not ceilings.
- Tuning off-set or wrong-main-stat Echoes because they dropped gold. Rarity does not redeem a wrong line; re-farm instead.
- Tuning Cost-1 pieces to +25. Trivially replaceable slots consuming premium milestones.
- Ignoring the Shell Credit line item. Five tunes per Echo, across a roster, at escalating costs, against Ascension demands in the hundreds of thousands — Shells are a real constraint.
- Feeding upgraded Echoes into Data Merge planning. Upgraded, equipped, or locked pieces are excluded from merging; keep merge stock clean.
- Spending the week's Tuners on whoever is on screen. Tuner allocation is roster strategy; run the allocation order above, not the character you last played.
The tuning checklist
Before each tuning session:
- Gold, correct main stat, correct Sonata tags — all three verified?
- Stop rules table at hand, and the +10 evaluation treated as mandatory rather than optional?
- Tuner drawer: Premium tier healthy, Synthesis run, Tacet Field claims planned for the week's income?
- Shell Credits above the floor needed for the next Ascension project?
- Is this Echo on the allocation list (carry's five pieces, then supports' cores), or is it a bench impulse?
Tuning is the discipline layer of the Echo system: farming supplies the possibilities, main stats and sets filter them, and tuning decides — irreversibly — which pieces become permanent. The accounts that finish strong are not the ones that tuned the most; they are the ones that stopped early most often, banked the difference, and spent it only on Echoes that had already proven themselves at +10.
