Wuthering Waves Beginner Guide: Your First 10 Hours and First-Week Priorities

Updated 2026-09 Game version 3.6 Reading time 19 min

Verified against the released game (v3.6). Where sources disagree, we say so.

Your first useful goal in Wuthering Waves is to build a small group you understand, open the systems that support it, and spend materials on upgrades you can actually use. The difficult part is deciding what deserves attention when story quests, Echo collecting, Convene banners, and several different progression levels appear together.

This roadmap covers version 3.6, released on August 20, 2026. Treat its ten-hour blocks as suggested sessions: exploration, dialogue, and combat practice will change your pace. An hour label never guarantees that you have reached a particular Union Level or unlocked a particular challenge. Follow the milestones in order, and move a task into a later session when its prerequisites are still closed.

The spending principle throughout is simple: identify the next obstacle, choose an upgrade that addresses it, and farm the material that upgrade needs. That habit will remain useful long after your opening team changes.

Start with your account, controls, and the opening story

Choose a platform you can comfortably use for repeated sessions. Wuthering Waves is available on PC through the official launcher, Epic Games Store, and Steam; on iOS and Android; on PS5; through the Mac App Store; and on Xbox Series X|S, with Xbox on PC and Game Pass support. Cross-save and cross-progression support playing across supported platforms. If you intend to move between devices, review the Cross-Platform Guide before working through account linking.

At the beginning, you choose Rover's appearance. The Change Appearance option is under Settings, Other, Player Setting. Choose the presentation you prefer, then spend your attention on the controls you will use in every fight: Basic Attack, Heavy Attack, dodge, Resonance Skill, Resonance Liberation, and character switching.

Follow the opening story through Huanglong, the starting nation, and its city Jinzhou. This gives your exploration a direction while introducing systems. The Data Bank becomes available during the prologue quest “Utterance of Marvels: II,” so collecting and comparing Echoes belongs after that introduction.

Use this opening sequence:

  1. Set controls so you can dodge and switch characters without searching for the input.
  2. Continue the story and complete each system tutorial as it appears.
  3. Read Rover's combat descriptions before spending broadly on upgrades.
  4. Activate nearby Resonance Beacons and collect useful materials along your route.
  5. Revisit progression menus when an upgrade or system becomes available.

Keep a short list of questions raised by the tutorials. Answering one practical question, such as which gauge enables a swap skill, is a better early milestone than memorizing every menu label.

Use the first ten hours as a sequence of milestones

The roadmap alternates story progress with short equipment and resource checks. Avoid turning every check into a separate farming project. You are looking for the change that helps the next stretch of play.

Suggested playtime Main task Useful stopping point
Hours 0–2 Follow the opening story and practice Rover's controls You can distinguish a dodge, a Resonance Skill, and a character swap
Hours 2–4 Explore near your route and begin Data Bank collection once unlocked You understand what an Echo equips and can identify a missing collection entry
Hours 4–6 Choose your current combat focus and inspect upgrade requirements You can name the next useful Resonator or weapon upgrade and its missing material
Hours 6–8 Spend available Waveplate on that need and continue quests Your spending has a clear purpose and you recognize any progression gate
Hours 8–10 Review Union Level, SOL3 Phase, available routines, and exploration claims You have a concrete objective for your next session

If the early story takes longer, keep following it. If you progress faster, bring the next milestone forward. These blocks organize decisions rather than predict quest completion times.

During the middle sessions, try to connect exploration to an upgrade. A route containing a needed regional specialty, an uncollected Echo, and a nearby quest offers several reasons to travel there. A long detour toward a material for a Resonator you have not chosen to develop is harder to justify.

At the last checkpoint, write a single next action: complete a required quest, gather a named specialty shown by your upgrade screen, or claim the appropriate challenge reward. “Make everyone stronger” is too broad to guide spending. “Finish the weapon upgrade for the character I use most” gives you a clear stopping point and leaves remaining resources available for the next decision.

Make Spectro Rover your first combat learning project

Rover begins in the Spectro form and uses a Sword. That starting availability makes Rover a practical character for learning movement, attack timing, and the connection between personal resources and team switching. You can begin that practice immediately, without making a Convene result the foundation of your plan.

Use Spectro Rover as the focus of your opening investment if you enjoy the Sword controls. Learn what the displayed Forte Circuit asks you to build and spend, observe the Resonance Skill's cooldown, and practice returning to movement after an attack. Those are the habits you will need when evaluating other Resonators.

A useful practice session has a specific aim. In one encounter, concentrate on recognizing the enemy's attack. In the next, watch your energy gauges. Then combine the two while keeping enough attention on your surroundings to dodge. Change one habit at a time so you can tell what improved.

Rover also introduces an important roster distinction: different Rover attributes belong to one character slot, with attribute selection handled through menus. The documented forms in version 3.6 are Spectro, Havoc, Aero, and Electro. Their existence does not mean all are available at the start.

Havoc is unlocked through the main story; the regular story route requires Chapter 1 Act VI and Union Level 21. Consider that a later checkpoint, with details in the Rover Forms Guide. Keep Spectro's immediate job focused on helping you understand combat and progress through the opening systems.

Before a large upgrade, decide whether Rover remains your current focus or whether another Resonator has become the character you prefer controlling. Make that decision from actual play. A future form or an attractive banner image gives you less information about your present needs than the fights you are attempting now.

Learn the three combat resources before chasing a rotation

The combat interface tracks several resources with different purposes. Confusing them can make an otherwise usable team feel unresponsive.

Term What it controls Opening practice
Resonance Energy Availability of Resonance Liberation Notice when Liberation becomes ready during combat
Concerto Energy The outgoing Outro Skill and incoming Intro Skill when you switch at full energy Practice a deliberate switch when Concerto reaches 100
Forte Circuit A Resonator's individual resource or special mechanism Read the character's description and identify how the resource is used

Resonance Skill is the cooldown-based skill. Resonance Liberation uses Resonance Energy. Your Forte Circuit supplies the individual mechanic that helps distinguish one Resonator from another. Read these together so you understand why you are pressing each input.

Concerto Energy builds through combat actions, including attacks, skills, and defensive actions. At 100, switching triggers the outgoing Resonator's Outro Skill and the incoming Resonator's Intro Skill. Additional Concerto generation beyond the cap is wasted. For an opening exercise, notice the full gauge and make a purposeful handoff instead of continuing indefinitely on the same character.

Defense deserves its own practice. A last-moment Perfect Dodge enables a Dodge Counter through the following Basic Attack. Attacks with the golden parry cue can be interrupted with a correctly timed Basic Attack or a skill that supports parrying. A successful parry also reduces the enemy's Vibration Strength, helping create a stagger opportunity.

Try this short learning loop:

  1. Observe an enemy attack before committing to a long sequence.
  2. Dodge it, then practice the counter when a Perfect Dodge succeeds.
  3. Attempt a parry when you recognize the golden cue.
  4. Watch Concerto and perform a full-energy switch.
  5. Notice whether the next character enters with an Intro Skill.

The Combat System Guide explains the full vocabulary. For the opening hours, a reliable defensive response and a deliberate handoff are enough to give your practice direction.

Separate Union Level, SOL3 Phase, and Resonator level

Union Level measures account progression. SOL3 Phase governs world progression, including enemy levels and reward tiers. A Resonator's level is that individual character's development. Spending Resonance Potions on Rover therefore addresses a different problem from completing an account progression requirement.

Union EXP comes from sources such as quests, exploration firsts, daily activities, and events. Repeatedly defeating ordinary overworld enemies is not a Union Level grinding route. Enemy drops and Echo collection can still make those fights useful, but choose quests and other documented account EXP sources when Union Level is the obstacle.

SOL3 Phase advances with Union Level, with phase progression organized around ten-level intervals. The documented SOL3 Phase Ascension tutorial quests occur at Union Level 20, 40, and 60. At these milestones, check the required quest before assuming that collecting more materials will open the next upgrade.

Progression layer What to inspect when blocked Appropriate response
Union Level The account requirement attached to your objective Continue quests, exploration firsts, and available account activities
SOL3 Phase An outstanding phase requirement or ascension quest Prepare your current team and complete the required progression task
Resonator level and Ascension The character's cap and material list Gather the listed materials once the account requirements are satisfied
Weapon progression Weapon level, ascension requirements, and materials Upgrade the equipped weapon for your current combat focus
Data Bank Collection progress and the required SOL3 Phase Collect missing entries while addressing the world progression gate

The Data Bank demonstrates why these layers matter together. Data Merge requires both Data Bank Level 8 and SOL3 Phase 3, associated with the Union Level 20 progression checkpoint. Reaching the Data Bank number alone does not satisfy both conditions. Higher Echo rarity bands also have SOL3 Phase requirements.

Before a phase quest, inspect your active equipment and practice any fight mechanic causing repeated failures. Higher SOL3 Phase raises enemy levels and the reward tiers of activities such as Forgery Challenges, Tacet Fields, and bosses. Prepare for that change through the upgrades currently available, then continue progressing. The Resonator Leveling Guide covers the character side of these gates in more detail.

Give each early upgrade a job

Choose a small active group and one primary combat focus. This is a resource planning recommendation: Resonator levels, weapons, Forte upgrades, and Echo development all consume materials, so developing many projects together spreads your supplies across more requirements.

For the character you use most, inspect the equipped weapon as carefully as the Resonator level. Weapon base stats increase with level and ascension, and weapon passives are already active at Rank 1. A character upgrade does not replace checking whether the weapon itself has been developed.

Resonance Potions provide Resonator EXP; Energy Cores provide weapon EXP. Shell Credits appear across upgrade costs. When one is missing, name it precisely. That prevents a vague feeling of weakness from turning into random challenge claims.

For Resonator Ascension, inspect the actual material list. Boss materials, common enemy drops, regional specialties, and Shell Credits are the general material categories. Match your target's displayed requirements to the correct source. Regional specialties can be gathered without spending Waveplate, while designated Overlord Class bosses supply character ascension materials through their reward claims.

Forte upgrades cover Basic Attack, Resonance Skill, Resonance Liberation, Forte Circuit, and Intro Skill. Start by understanding which parts you regularly use. This guide does not assign a universal skill order to every Resonator; your chosen character's mechanics should determine that decision.

Use a purchase-style check before committing materials: identify the improvement, confirm that the relevant character is in your active plans, and check whether the missing requirement is farmable now. If an account gate blocks the upgrade, additional copies of an unrelated material will not remove that gate.

When you obtain a new Resonator, try the controls before expanding your farming list. Keep the next completed upgrade visible in your plan, and add another project when you can explain what it contributes.

Spend early Waveplate on the obstacle in front of you

Waveplate is the stamina resource used to claim rewards from progression activities. Its documented cap is 240, and normal regeneration adds one Waveplate every six minutes, including while offline. That rate is equivalent to 240 over a full day when normal regeneration can continue.

Waveplate Crystals provide an overflow system introduced in version 1.2. At the cap, overflow accumulates at one per twelve minutes. That is slower than normal regeneration, so make a useful claim before leaving your regular balance full for a long stretch when you have an appropriate activity available. Overflow helps with scheduling; it does not make the two regeneration rates equal.

Choose an activity by reward need:

Current need Activity Waveplate planning
Weapon ascension or Forte materials Forgery Challenge 40 per claim
A designated boss material for Resonator Ascension Boss Challenge 60 per claim
Shell Credits or Resonator EXP supplies Simulation Challenge Check the displayed claim cost
Echo development supplies and sets Tacet Field / Tacet Suppression 60 per claim
Boss-specific materials for later Forte upgrades Weekly Challenge Check the displayed cost and shared weekly allowance

For Simulation Challenges and Weekly Challenges, use the claim cost displayed in game when planning a session. Set aside the required amount before allocating your remaining balance to the Forgery, Boss Challenge, or Tacet Field rewards you also need.

For example, two Forgery claims and one Boss Challenge claim total 140 Waveplate. Use that combination only when both rewards serve your chosen upgrades and the activities are available. It is an arithmetic example, not a recommended daily quota. If Shell Credits are the missing requirement, adjust the plan toward that shortage.

Early Tacet Field spending should answer an actual Echo development need. If your weapon or character upgrade is blocked by a specific material, assess that upgrade before committing your balance to repeated attempts at better Echoes. Higher Data Bank rarity access and higher world reward tiers also give you reasons to avoid trying to finish an endgame Echo build immediately.

Crystal Solvent restores Waveplate and does not expire. Keep it for a defined use: an available upgrade, a planned farming session, or another clear material need. Its presence in your inventory does not require immediate consumption. The Waveplate Priority Guide develops this decision process for later account stages.

Collect Echo variety while keeping early investment modest

Defeated Tacet Discords can leave absorbable Echoes. Echoes supply equipment stats and an Echo Skill, while their Sonata Effects provide set bonuses. Each Resonator has five Echo slots, and the equipped combination must fit the current Cost budget.

The starting budget is 8 Cost and reaches 12 at Data Bank Level 9. Common Echoes cost 1, Elite Echoes cost 3, and Overlord and Calamity Echoes cost 4. A layout such as 4 + 3 + 3 + 1 + 1 belongs to the full 12-Cost budget. If an equipment example does not fit your early allowance, check the Data Bank requirement before trying to copy it.

The Data Bank rewards collection progress. Repeated copies of an already recorded Echo at the same rarity do not provide new first-absorption EXP. Search for missing entries and higher rarities instead of expecting the same familiar enemy to solve every collection gap.

Data Bank level Documented milestone Beginner implication
5 Three-star Echo drops become available Continue broadening the collection
8 Four-star rarity access; Data Merge also needs SOL3 Phase 3 Check both account and collection requirements
9 The equipment budget reaches 12 Cost Revisit combinations that previously exceeded your allowance
15 Five-star Echo drops become available Review rarity access alongside the required SOL3 Phase
21 Drops are restricted to five-star rarity Treat this as a later goal with its world progression requirement

For opening equipment, read main stats and Sonata Effect descriptions, then choose pieces relevant to the character using them. Set bonuses use two-piece and five-piece structures. Do not let completing a set become an excuse to ignore the actual equipment descriptions or your current upgrade needs.

Tuning reveals substats at five-level milestones, using Tuners and Shell Credits. Revealed substats cannot be rerolled. That makes aggressive spending on a temporary piece a decision with lasting resource consequences: you cannot budget around repairing an unwanted roll later.

Use enough early development to support the encounters you are doing, then reassess when better rarity access opens. Keep promising Echoes locked before considering Data Merge; locked, equipped, or upgraded Echoes are excluded from merging. The Data Bank Guide and Echo Tuning Guide separate collection progress from deeper equipment investment.

Understand the Tide before making a Convene decision

Astrite converts to Tides at 160 per pull. The Tide type determines which Convene category it serves, so identify the banner before converting currency.

Tide Regular use
Lustrous Tide Standard and novice Convenes
Radiant Tide Featured Resonator Convene
Forging Tide Featured Weapon Convene

Use the banner's own rules when reviewing any special Convene. Different banner types do not share their pity counts. Progress toward a standard guarantee therefore should not be treated as progress toward a featured Resonator guarantee.

The Novice Convene, “Utterance of Marvels,” guarantees a non-promotional five-star Resonator within 50 pulls. Its discount means the full 50 pulls cost 40 Lustrous Tide, and it closes early if you obtain the five-star first. Beginner's Choice Convene lets you select a standard five-star target, guaranteed within 80 pulls. These are separate decisions from spending toward a featured character.

For regular Featured Resonator Convene, a five-star arrives within 80 pulls. The first five-star has a 50% chance of being the featured Resonator; losing that outcome makes the next five-star the featured one. The documented worst case is 160 pulls. Featured Weapon Convene has no equivalent 50/50: its five-star result is the featured weapon, within 80 pulls.

Those guarantees explain why a small currency balance should not become a promise to yourself that you will obtain a specific character immediately. Decide which outcome you want, read the applicable rules, and preserve the flexibility of Astrite until you have made that choice.

Likewise, do not build your starting plan around an old event reward still being obtainable. The roster records Rebecca as a free Resonator from the version 3.4 collaboration event; that historical entry does not verify a current new-account claim in version 3.6. Use rewards you can actually access when choosing your team. The Convene Guide covers the banner system in depth.

Explore Huanglong with a destination and collect the rewards

Use the opening story as your route through Huanglong, then attach short exploration tasks to that route. Resonance Beacons provide fast travel when activated. Regional specialties, common enemy materials, Echo collection, chests, puzzles, and Sonance Caskets offer different reasons to stop along the way.

Choose detours according to your current goal. If you need a regional specialty, gather it while working through nearby content. If the Data Bank needs variety, check for an unrecorded Echo. If Union Level is the obstacle, prioritize quest and exploration progress over repeating an enemy solely for its common drops.

Exploration Progress rewards are claimed through the Pioneer Association in Jinzhou at 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% intervals. Survey Tasks unlock at Union Level 14. Include a claim check when you return to town so completed exploration contributes to your available supplies.

Sonance Caskets are collectibles exchanged for rewards. Keep their collection separate in your thinking from a boss reward Casket, where you claim the boss's materials. Similar terminology can otherwise make a material instruction harder to follow than it needs to be.

The map's Region Guide, introduced in version 3.0, offers another place to orient your exploration. You can revisit a region with a defined purpose rather than trying to clear every visible point immediately. Use the Huanglong Exploration Guide when you want a dedicated route through the starting nation's wider areas.

Turn the first week into a repeatable routine

Set first-week goals around the systems you have unlocked. Your account's pace determines which activities belong in the routine. A short session can still be productive when you know what to claim, what to spend, and which objective to resume.

Begin with available daily activities, your Waveplate balance, and the material shortage attached to your next upgrade. Continue story or exploration afterward. Check earned rewards from exploration and the free Pioneer Podcast track as they become available. The Podcast has a paid track too, but its existence does not make a purchase a progression requirement in this roadmap.

Once Weekly Challenges are accessible, inspect which boss supplies the Forte material for your planned Resonator. Weekly boss rewards have a shared allowance of three claims across the category, refreshing on Monday. Three available claims do not mean three claims from every boss. Choose the relevant reward before spending part of that allowance.

Later Forte development makes that distinction matter: maximizing a Resonator's skills requires 26 weekly-boss Skill Upgrade Materials. This is a long-term total; plan the materials needed for your next upgrade before making each claim. Repeatedly claiming unrelated materials can leave your intended upgrade waiting on later weekly opportunities.

Use this routine to avoid the early mistakes that can stretch progression across weeks:

  1. Keep the active upgrade list short. Finish a useful character, weapon, or Forte step before adding several new resource demands. Repeated partial investments leave more shortages competing for the next day's Waveplate.
  2. Check the gate before farming. A missing Union Level or SOL3 Phase requirement needs progression work. More of the wrong material cannot satisfy it.
  3. Match every limited claim to a need. Identify the correct weekly boss material and distinguish the shared claim allowance from the normal Waveplate balance.
  4. Reassess an Echo before further tuning. An unwanted revealed substat cannot be rerolled. Decide whether more investment in that piece still serves your current team.
  5. Review duplicates before using Syntonize. Syntonize consumes a duplicate weapon to improve its passive rank. Consider whether you want that copy available as equipment before consuming it.
  6. Read Convene rules before converting Astrite. Tide types and separate pity pools can redirect a saving plan if you treat every pull as interchangeable.
  7. Use actual unlocks and timers for optional activities. Old reward announcements and somebody else's account progress are poor substitutes for what your account currently shows.

When available, Depths of Illusive Realm offers a Waveplate-free activity with supplied maxed Resonators; its documented Union Level threshold is 17. It can give you more combat practice without competing with material claims. Tower of Adversity has a documented Union Level 15 unlock, but access alone is not a reason to rebuild your entire roster around it immediately.

At the end of your next session, leave a practical note for yourself: the quest you are continuing, the upgrade you intend to complete, and the source of its missing material. Keep the Daily and Weekly Routine Guide nearby as more activities open, and expand the routine only when you understand what the added activity contributes.
